Acupuncture Clinic La Quinta, CA

Acupuncture Clinic and Practitioners in La Quinta, California

Acupuncture is a branch of Oriental Medicine that consists of the insertion of fine, sterile needles at specific acupoints on the body. Traditional acupuncture is based on ancient Chinese theories of the flow of Qi (pronounced “chee”). Qi is the vital energy or life force in all living things that is necessary for growth, development, movement, maintenance of body temperature, and protection against illness and disease.

Qi flows along river-like meridians inside the body energizing, nourishing, and supporting every cell, tissue, muscle, organ and gland in the body. Physical and emotional trauma, stress, lack of exercise, overexertion, seasonal changes, diet, accidents or excessive activity can lead to a blockage or imbalance of Qi. When the disruption to Qi is prolonged or excessive, or if the body is in a weakened state, then illness, pain or disease may develop. What Do Acupuncture Clinics Do?

Acupuncturists evaluate the quality, quantity, and balance of Qi flowing within the body. When an imbalance is noted, acupuncturists use a variety of techniques including acupuncture, herbs, moxibustion, tui-na massage, electro-acupuncture, gwa-sha, and cupping to restore and maintain the proper flow of Qi within the body. When Qi is balanced and flowing freely, the body flourishes and its full health and vitality are expressed.

What Types Of Conditions Does Acupuncture Care Treat?

Acupuncture can be used to alleviate pain, increase the body's resistance to illness, promote detoxification, and enhance a person's energy level and sense of well being. It is also used to stop smoking, lower blood pressure, alleviate skin disorders, and relieve constipation, anxiety, insomnia, nausea, allergies, and asthma. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the National Institutes for Health (NIH), and clinical experience, acupuncture is useful in the treatment of:

Does Acupuncture Needles Hurt?

Most of the time people do not feel the insertion of the needle into the skin. Occasionally, people may feel a sensation like a mosquito bite that disappears very quickly. Once the needle is in, you may feel nothing at all, or you may feel sensations such as warmth, a dull ache, tingling, heaviness, or a “moving” sensation. This is usually felt only for a short period of time, or if the practitioner is manipulating or stimulating the needle. These are sensations of the needle connecting with your Qi. Many people find acupuncture to be very relaxing, and even fall asleep during the treatments. At La Quinta Acupuncture, our practitioners are very skilled and will make your acupuncture session very pleasant and relaxing.

What Are The Acupuncture Needles Like?

Acupuncture needles are very thin, solid and made from stainless steel. They are 25-50 times thinner than a hypodermic needle and the point is smooth and rounded rather than hollow. Only sterile, disposable needles are used so there is no risk of infection.

How Many Acupuncture Treatments Do I Need?

The course of treatment required varies from person to person and depends on the nature, severity, and duration of the complaint. Chronic conditions usually require more treatments than acute or short-term conditions. Some people may be looking for a single treatment to relax, or calm the mind. Others may need a few weeks of treatments for their condition, while those with chronic or degenerative diseases may require longer-term care. What Can I Expect During Acupuncture Treatment?

The initial acupuncture treatment at La Quinta Acupuncture generally takes between 60 to 90 minutes and consists of a comprehensive medical history, examination and customized acupuncture treatment. Follow up appointments usually last between 45-60 minutes. (Cosmetic acupuncture appointments are about 60-90 minutes in length.) Between 2-20 needles may be used during the course of a treatment and are typically left in for 15-45 minutes depending on the chief complaint and individual's constitution. After the needles are removed, a treatment plan will be determined, and recommendations will be made on how to get the most out of your treatment.
