Scoliosis is a descriptive term, not a disease. This is the description of the spine with lateral (to the side) curvature.
This is usually hereditary and will develop during middle to late childhood. You may notice your child with uneven shoulders, always leaning to one side, an uneven waist or just a hump in their back when they bend forward. You may not even notice anything at all.
All spines have curves. Some curvature is normal. However, abnormal side-to-side (lateral) curves in the spinal column, are not normal, and are referred to as scoliosis.
If caught early, chiropractic with core physical therapy has shown improvement. This is a much safer approach then letting it progress to the point where surgery may be required. My philosophy is to always try the safer things first before I try the high risk procedure. If it were my child, I do anything in my power to prevent my kid go under the knife. If it were necessary, then I would be the first to recommend it, but I would try avoid it if possible.
So if you think your child may have scoliosis, bring them in and we can check them for free. There is no charge for this screening exam. If you have already received x-rays, you can bring them in and we can analyze them to see how we can help your child also.
