Unless you are dead, you are living with stress. This is a perfectly healthy response and it will set off a certain cascade of physiological responses that are essential for survival. However, when we are under constant stress, our body will only be able to adapt for so long before it fails.
So, let's talk about this response. The first thing that happens is that your nervous system will detect a stimulus or a stressor. This can be a tiger leaping at you while you at a watering hole. Your body will then react, by stimulating the sympathetic nervous system. You may have heard of this being referred to the fight or flight response. This part of your nervous system is used for survival. The other part of your nervous system is called your parasympathetic nervous system, this one is used when your are relaxing, digesting, etc.
Both of these parts of your nervous system are essential for survival. However, in this day and age people are constantly stimulating their "fight or flight" mechanisms in their body. This happens in traffic, worry about bills, relationships, the economy, divorce, etc. This is where things begin to break down. This is because this "fight or flight" (sympathetic) part of your nervous system doesn't care about building muscle, increasing sex drive, improving digestion, immunity or just growth. The reason why these essential life functions don't work under stress is because your body is just trying to survive that tiger in that moment in time.
That is why people under constant stress will have a low libido, high cholesterol, poor digestion, low pain tolerance, increased fat around the mid section, poor sleeping habits, high blood pressure, diabetes, anxiety, depression, bone loss, etc.
